The AuburnSports.com Rundown

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene over the Internet to discuss the important happenings in and around the Auburn program, which today centers on bowl prep and a memorable recruiting crescendo as the Early Signing Day hit.

Auburn didn't lose any important recruits and in fact flipped one (DL Amaris Williams) from Florida. The Tigers also snatched OL Favour Edwin from the claws of Alabama and Florida 12 hours after the ESD window opened.

Overall, this is a very strong showing for Hugh Freeze and his staff after their first full year on the recruiting trail. Pre-eminent classes at both linebacker and wideout show that these coaches understand how to augment a roster throughtfully and assuredly.

The Fightin' Pearls are 9-2 and look very strong heading into their final two non-con games before SEC plays starts at Arkansas on Jan. 6th. Of note, the team's free-throw shooting has improved dramatically while backup center Dylan Cardwell may finally be blossoming into a two-way player who doesn't foul every 90 seconds.

The show ends with a notable supply of commendations and shoutouts for the most outstanding members (this week) from The Bunker community.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on what's expected to happen from an Auburn perspective on signing day Wednesday.

We know it's going to be a day when Auburn consummates its first really good signing class in many years, but there still are some questions?

  • Will LJ McCray flip?
  • Will Amaris Williams flip?
  • Will KJ Bolden flip?
  • What is Coen Echols thinking?
  • What about Favour Edwin?

Caleb answers all that and more during a 25-minute recruiting segment. He also reviews what was a pretty busy weekend in terms of portal visitors.

The guys then review what's been a BUSY week on the football side — players opting out, a few players opting in, the 2024 schedule drop, bowl practice and Freeze's admission that he's building around Payton Thorne and not looking to replace him.

The topic then turns to basketball, where the Fightin' Pearls earned a big win over Southern Cal and really look like a team that can challenge for an SEC title. This team has tons of depth. Is it possible to have too much depth?

The show ends with a massive conglomeration of commendations and shoutouts for the most outstanding members (this week) from The Bunker community.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on BIG CHANGES underway on the football side of things.

Four more Auburn players have entered the portal while several players from other schools have visited. One, wideout Robert Lewis from Georgia State, already has committed to play at Auburn beginning next season. The Tigers also added JUCO offensive lineman Seth Wilfred on Monday, though he's not a portal guy.

Will Hugh Freeze actually stand pat at quarterback? He says he's good with Payton Thorne, but we're sure he's keeping his eyes open as the portal continues to populate.

Five-star wideout Ryan Williams from Saraland, Ala., has announced plans to re-classify to the Class of 2024. He's still an Alabama commit as of this hour, but can the Tigers flip him? Caleb still isn't sure how to read this one.

Auburn top portal target along the offensive line, Fernando Carmona from San Jose State, will be here this weekend. Who else will be making the trip?

The guys also break down the Tigers' HUGE vict'ry over the Indiana Hoosiers in basketball and look ahead to games against UNC Asheville and Southern Cal this week.

The show ends with a 55-gallon drum full of commendations and shoutouts for the most outstanding members (this week) from The Bunker community.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on how the initial waves of Transfer Portal activity has affected the Tigers' football roster.

Six players have declared their intention to transfer. Auburn has at least 10 offers out to other players, perhaps more by the time you listen to this show. The Tigers seem to be focusing their efforts on offensive line and defensive line so far.

Cam Coleman flipped from Texas A&M and then earned his fifth star, bumping the Tigers to No. 10 in the latest Rivals team rankings. That was a serious heist — and one that may set the tone for a strong finish to this class.

Crime McGriff is back on the recruiting trail, which is a good thing for Auburn. Is he going to remain in this role or can he help the program more in a different capacity?

The Fightin' Pearls lost a tough one at Appalachian State last weekend. What did that loss tell us about the ball club? What are the most pressing issues? And is Denver Jones having a terrible start or does it just seem that way?

The show ends with a cornucopia of commendations and shoutouts for the most outstanding members (this week) from The Bunker community.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' stinging loss in the Iron Bowl.

We're not here to re-litigate the fourth-quarter follies, but we go back through them briefly before taking a look at what comes next for this football program. It's time to take stock of what helps make the Tigers better in 2024 and add what's missing and cut what isn't needed.

That sounds cutthroat, but college football is a cutthroat world these days.

Caleb and B-Matt recap what was a very busy weekend from a recruiting perspective. They review the eight biggest visitors and make some predictions about what happens during the next three weeks. The early signing period begins soon.

The guys also discuss the Fightin' Pearls, who have games against Virginia Tech and Appalachian State this weekend.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' troubling loss on the football field.

New Mexico State? Twenty-one points? Seriously?

Yeah, it happened. The Iron Bowl still will be played Saturday and Auburn can win the game. What will it take? A massive effort. Is this team capable of putting together a massive effort in its current state? We have theories.

Why does Hugh Freeze look sullen? Stultz thinks it's "merely" disappointment.

Caleb gets us up to speed on some recruiting situations — most notably the Tigers' efforts to flip both Cam Coleman (from Texas A&M) and Ryan Williams (from Alabama).

The Fightin' Pearls are 3-1 after a pair of straightforward wins in New York. Bruce Pearl is giddy about his depth and why shouldn't he be? This team has a lot of players. Alabama A&M awaits Tuesday.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers extending their three-game win streak at Arkansas.

What a performance! The Hogs were toast within five minutes and the home fans were beside themselves. It was a moment of exhiliration for Hugh Freeze, who finally saw his team dominate an opponent in all three phases.

So what now? Let me tell you what now. Auburn plays a pretty good New Mexico State team that has won eight games for the first time since the 1960s. Is this team good enough to beat Auburn? Probably not, but looking ahead to the Iron Bowl is not adviseable.

There are more questions:
• Is Payton Thorne actually good now?
• What does Auburn's strong work in the 2025 recruiting class mean moving forward?
• Which one of the Tigers' latest commits has Caleb thinking BIG?
• What did we learn from the Fightin' Pearls' loss to Baylor?

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' second conference win at Vandy — and what it told us.

The biggest thing is that Hugh Freeze is calling plays again! But how many plays? It's a secret. Brian Stultz thinks it's 50-60 percent. Freeze also says he's "helping" to make defensive calls on third down and maybe inside the red zone. Not bad!

Can Payton Thorne continue his (reasonably) prolific ways? He's had a good two weeks. That's better than zero good weeks. He'll need to be that guy if Auburn is to win this weekend in Fayetteville.

Caleb had a chance to watch two Auburn commits play against each other — and watched a coeveted target play as well. How did that go? What does he think about Phat Burnette's de-commitment?

Auburn hoops opens its regular season Tuesday night against Baylor. BP has a good team. Yes, he does.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' first conference win of the season.

The guys also discuss Hugh Freeze's mini rant from his Monday press conference addressing the misconception (at least from his perspective) that the offense wasn't sufficiently aggressive during the second half against Mississippi State. Does he have a point?

Also of note is Payton Thorne's pretty amazing game (20-of-26 for 230 yards and three touchdowns) and what led to that. Freeze made it pretty clear that he put his foot down and make irrevocable changes to what the offense would do against MSU.

Caleb provides an update on a few key 2025 recruits who made the trip to Auburn for the game last weekend. Henry then updates us on a pair of basketball recruits who are taking a liking to the Tigers — including a 2024 power forward who is planning to make a decision next week.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on what Hugh Freeze had to say after the stinging home loss to Ole Miss.

The quarterback situation couldn't be a bigger mess, but Freeze seems dead-set on rotating both Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford. How does that make sense? B-Matt tries to make sense of it. Also, why does Freeze allow himself to be off-kilter from Philip Montgomery?

Does the losing affect recruiting? Caleb thinks it might in a few cases, but that the vast majority of recruits with whom Auburn already has connected have heard the chatter from Freeze himself that Auburn needs more playmakers. In that sense, losing simply reinforces what Auburn has been saying all along.

Aden Holloway and Tre Donaldson were stand-out performers during the open practice/scrimmage before the Ole Miss game last weekend. If point-guard play is excellent this season, and that's a big IF, this team can be really, really good.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on what Hugh Freeze had to say after the 30-point loss at LSU.

He seems genuinely shocked at how badly this offense is performing. Can this be solved? Well, maybe solved isn't the right word. Can this situation be improved? We're getting skeptical. Is this coaching staff willing to do what it takes to score more points? Or will they approach things with pre-conceived notions about how it's supposed to look?

The guys also dive into injuries, tempo, "saving the defense" and other football topics of intrigue.

The Pro Day (basketball) scrimmage also is a hot topic. The guys recap what they saw inside Neville Arena last week and ponder this team's ceiling. It's reasonably high. They have shooters. They made need a few more defenders.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on what Hugh Freeze had to say during his Monday press conference.

Did he give us some ideas about what they'll be doing in Baton Rouge? HE DID. Freeze said he wants to shorten the game and limit LSU's possessions (and touchdowns), which will require a strong ground game and sharp calls/execution on third down. Is that doable? We're not sure.

Freeze also said he wants to see the offense operate more in line with what the players can actually do well. That seemed like a shot — and not the first — at offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Is trouble brewing?

Freeze had some really nice things to say about Jaylin Simpson and Marcus Harris, who have been straight BALLIN' this season. Simpson is exepcted to return for the LSU game after coming out of the Georgia loss.

The Ole Miss game will kick at 6 o'clock. This is good news.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' home loss to No. 1 Georgia over the weekend.

The offense actually made sense, which is surprising after the mess we saw at A&M, and ended up gaining 200+ yards on UGA. Payton Thorne looked like he understood what to do. Jarquez Hunter and Brian Battie were strong. The offensive line was better. Is Hugh Freeze finally getting things sorted on this side of the ball?

Jaylin Simpson had himself a day and the Tigers created more turnovers. Is Ron Roberts the most valuable assistant from a coaching perspective? Jay G. may be an outlier on that.

Caleb and Henry get us up to speed after a MASSIVE weekend of recruiting visits — official and unofficial. This might be a great time to flip a 6-foot-1 nickel who can cover tight ends, right?

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' loss at Texas A&M and the shockingly poor play from the offense.

How in the world is Hugh Freeze going to create order from this level of chaos? It sure sounds like the Tigers are going to stick with Payton Thorne for now, which seems like an insane idea. The transfer quarterback was terrible against A&M and seems confused about how to read a defense. But does Robby Ashford or even Holden Geriner provide something better than what Thorne brings?

Are Freeze and Philip Montgomery on the same page?

Why can't Freeze call plays? Why is he so reticent?

Is the run game actually working?

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' win over Samford and the state of the team heading into College Station.

Quarterback Payton Thorne was at his very best against Samford. The transfer from Michigan State accounted for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns, but can he replicate that kind of effectiveness against the Southeastern Conference? The guys think it's more about this offensive line and this run game than anything the quarterback can or cannot do.

How about the defense? They've created seven takeaways, which is tied for the league lead, and have been at least solid against both the pass and the run. With nickel Keionte Scott out for the foreseeable future, however, can the Tigers' defense remain this stingy an opportunitistic?

Caleb reviews his road trips to see commits Bryce Cain and Perry Thompson down south, his trip to Parker High School in Birmingham to see targets Jeremiah Beamon, Na'eem Offord and Jourdin Crawford.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' 14-10 win at Cal.

What in the world was that. A win is a win, of course, but the Auburn masses were (and are) stupefied by the team's inability to make meaningful, in-game improvements from an offensive perspective. Bryan thinks the quarterback conundrum actually is a symptom of a bigger problem. Why is Hugh Freeze so adamant that Robby Ashford get a certain number of touches per game?

The defense? Excellent. Ron Roberts, Eugene Asante and Donovan Kaufman have been revelations. Can the Tigers' defense continue to build from here? We think it's possible.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' 59-14 victory over the UMass Minutemen.

It's a fine margin of victory, but several elements of the game seemed to irk coach Hugh Freeze. We tend to agree with his fussiness, though we speak more about run defense and he speaks more about missed connections on offense. Robby Ashford carved out a nice role last week with three red-zone touchdowns. Can he maintain that level of productivity moving forward? And how quickly should we expect improvement from Payton Thorne?

The Tigers' depth at tailback is amazing. Has it ever been this good?

The quarterback situation is settled with Payton Thorne in the top spot. Auburn's situation at tailback is deep and talented. The offensive line's run-block ability looks very strong. We know the Tigers will be running the ball plenty, but how much of a weapon can/will the pass game become?

Is the offense's ability to run the football Saturday indicative of problems along the defensive front? Bryan has some ideas about that.

Jakaleb Faulk became the Tigers' second commit of the 2025 cycle on Monday. How did Auburn manage to pull this one off? Caleb has some ideas about that.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on some movement within in the world of SEC football — both here and across the league.

Bryan is a big fan of the 2024 schedule, which will remain at eight games yet won't feature divisions.

Auburn added another safety over the weekend and played host to a handful of important targets over the weekend. Caleb breaks all that down.

The program's first Elite Camp of the summer yielded a few new offers including one to a quarterback we'll probably be hearing about for a while.

Baseball fell flat at exactly the wrong time last weekend and meekly bowed out from the NCAA Tournament. In so doing, the Tigers conceded what would have been their first-ever home Super Regional.

There is good news on the baseball front, however. We'll know more about it Friday, Bryan says.

The show ends with an oil tanker full of shout-outs and commendations for members of the Bunker community at AuburnSports.com.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on some potential, important changes to SEC football scheduling being discussed at Sandestin this week.

It's all about the money, isn't it? Of course it is.

Greg Sankey really wants to stiffen penalties for program that allow fans to storm the field after big wins. Is that a reasonable stance?

Jay Jacobs is retiring at Florida. The staff seems ambivalent about it.

Johni Broome is back for another season, which is a massive development for the Tigers' 2023-24 chances. The team still has a scholarship to give and would like to find someone to fill it.

Baseball is set to host a regional, but getting through won't be easy. B-Matt says Southern Miss is for real. A full week off between games could/should help the Tigers regain their previous form.

A cavalcade of Bunker stars are lauded for their contribitions and witticims during the SHOUT OUT portion of the show.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on some important additions to the football roster.

In all, Auburn lost 20 players to the portal and added 20 players from the portal. Balance.

Who are the newest additions? Can they help immediately?

Caleb delves into The Phenix (City) Four, which visited the Plains unoffically last week.

Hoops added a wing — and now has four newcomers expected to compete for starting jobs next season.

Also, baseball is surging after an eighth consecutive league victory, which has all but sealed Auburn as a regional host for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Can this team lock down a Top 8 national seed and clinch a Super Regional berth? It's actually possible at this point. Can you believe it?

Softball's season ended in the regional final over the weekend. What's next for Mickey Dean?

The show ends with a Nautilus submarine full of shoutouts and Bunker commendations.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on personnel changes within the football program during the past two weeks.

It's been busy. It's been (mostly) good news for Auburn.

The guys also take a gander at some major portal targets still outstanding — players that could have an effect on the number of wins this fall. There are some big hitters still out there.

Basketball has been happy and kinda sad about Johni Broome's excellent work at the G League Invite and subsequent invitation to the NBA Combine. What happens if Broome goes pro?

The guys also review some interesting developments on the baseball diamond, where Butch Thompson has turned his team around in a big way during the past month. Softball is headed to Clemson as the No. 2 seed in the Clemson regional.

The guys finish with a massive supply of shoutouts and other commendations after some strong work on the Bunker. It's the best message board alive for a reason, you know.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene (along with some esteemed Bunks) for a new edition of The Rundown, which opens with talk about the six football players who have visited the Plains recently.

Of note, two quarterbacks (Nebraska's Casey Thompson and Michigan State's Payton Thorne) have garnered major interest from Hugh Freeze and the Tigers.

Also, the team's Class of 2021 has been decimated like no other. Only three players from the class remain — just two years later!

On the basketball side, Auburn has made its pitch to both FSU wing Matthew Cleveland and Vanderbilt shooting guard Tyrin Lawrence. What's the latest there?

Softball and baseball were pretty good last weekend. That's good news with conference tournaments now on the horizon.

The guys finish with a burlap sack full of shoutouts and commendations for clever work on The Bunker.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton, Brian Stultz and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which opens with talk about a generally slow — but potentially fast-finish — transfer portal for football.

Auburn has played host to a few players and is expected to host a few more in short order. Let's discuss.

On the basketball side, Auburn lost a commitment from Mobile point guard Labaron Philon. Conversely, the Tigers added an assistant coach, they're playing host to a coveted portal wing this week and may be lining up a visit from another. They also added UAH transfer Chaney Johnson, who will provide help at small forward and power foward next season.

Softball and baseball were pretty good last weekend. Progress!

The guys finish with shoutouts and commendations for special contributions from Bunks on the Bunker!

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on a curiosuly slow start for all of college football in the transfer portal.

Auburn only has three offers out so far. The talent hasn't been there ... but much time remains for bigger names to make their intentions known.

On the basketball side, Auburn saw center Peyton Marshall de-commit. This wasn't unexpected. The Tigers remain on the trail of several guys in the portal including Florida State wing Matthew Cleveland and Texas Tech wing Jaylon Tyson.

Softball and baseball were OK last weekend. Both must be better this weekend.

The guys finish with a massive supply of shoutouts for the World's Greatest Message Boarders at The Bunker. Legends and studs galore.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on a massive recruiting weekend for both football and basketball.

Jordan-Hare Stadium was a mess Saturday due to cold rain, but things were sunny inside the Harbert Recruiting Center. More than a dozen four- and five-star recruits watched the game on a big-screen TV and again had many nice things to say about the Tigers. This class is shaping up to be a very good one.

On the basketball side, Auburn added a combo guard who provides the shooting presence this team needs. That can't be it, though. The Tigers still have a lot of work to do.

Softball and baseball were OK last weekend. Both must be better this weekend.

Bryan Matthews, Brian Stultz, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a rare MONDAY edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the movement within the men's basketball programs.

Pont guard Wendell Green said he's headed for the professional ranks, which leaves the Tigers without their biggest playmaker from the 2022-23 season. Will Aden Holloway and Tre Donaldson be enough? We don't think it's that simple.

Bruce Pearl is out there looking for several guys in the portal. Auburn needs shooters and defenders.

Spring football is winding down with A-Day on Saturday. Who has impressed? Who has moved up? Caleb also gets us up to speed on a handful of 4- and 5-star guys who visited last week.

Bryan Matthews, Brian Stultz, Caleb Jones and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a rare MONDAY edition of The Rundown, which focuses on the Tigers' second spring scrimmage.

It was a day general success on the defensive side, general malaise on the offensive side. The tailbacks were a bright spot, however. Is this a sign of things to come? The guys think an upgrade at quarterback could change the equation completely.

Football recruiting? Equation already changed. Caleb spent hours talking with top-level recruits on campus this past week and says things are definitely on the way up from that perspective. The top kids really like Auburn and they way Hugh Freeze recruits.

Basketball recruiting? It's portal season — and Auburn is on the prowl for shooters. Many shooters.

What happens now? Who will be back? Who will be leaving? What kinds of players does Auburn need to add from the portal? We'll take our best stab at it.

Also, we discuss spring football to this point and go through some second-hand insights from the Friday scrimmage. Was TeeJ really that good? Is Camden Brown the go-to guy outside? Why is everyone talking about Keldric Faulk all of the sudden?

The guys also review Spring Practice Four, which included unusual media access that provided some real insight into how some of these assistant coaches do their jobs. Bryan polls the podcast about who will take the first snap from behind center next fall. The answer may or may not surprise you.

The guys also review generally disappointing weekends on the diamonds. Baseball opens SEC play this weekend at No. 7 Arkansas while Auburn heads for Oklahoma City to play Weber State, Northwestern and No. 1 Oklahoma.

The guys also review a successful weekend on both the softball and baseball diamonds — with conference play about to start. Softball is at UGA this weekend while baseball will be at home for one final, non-conference series.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Jay G. Tate, Brian Stultz and Henry Patton reconvene to discuss another important week for football recruiting.

The emphasis this week is on Auburn gaining the commitment of Class of 2024 quarterback Walker White, who was coach Hugh Freeze's top choice at that position. White chose the Tigers over Clemson. He listed 14 players at his announcement as guys he wants to sign with Auburn and play with him in a couple years.

How's that for COLD BLOODED?

The guys also discuss an incredible week for basketball recruiting — TWO highly rated, Class of 2024 point guards committed to the Tigers last week. Why would two guys from the same class and the same position want to play together? That's a great question.

Can the Fightin' Pearls get this thing turned around ON THE FLOOR? We'll discuss. The entire panel still sees an NCAA Tournament berth on the horizon, but there is work to be done.

The Tigers have added at least seven new players this week, mostly from the transfer portal, and quickly are resolving personnel shortages that date back to 2017. Hugh Freeze and his staff are using the portal to their obvious advantage. Isn't that a nice change of pace?

Which newcomers already are on campus? How quickly can Auburn field a true two-deep along the offensive line? Spots are filling up quickly.

The guys also review a YUGE win on the court — the Tigers' 72-59 victory over the Razorbacks. Maybe this team isn't doomed after all. And perhaps Allen Flanigan can be a boost to the operation? It's too early to know that, of course, but he sure was good against Arkansas.
